A few months ago, John Barrowman somewhat confirmed that he would be walking away from The CW’s Arrowverse, which left a lot of fans wondering if Merlyn’s death in Arrow‘s Season 5 finale was really permanent. But according to a recent post from Barrowman’s Instagram – inspired by ComicBook.com‘s report – it appears that he is very keen to return.
John Barrowman played Malcolm Merlyn/Dark Archer, on Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow. He is also well-known for playing Captain Jack Harkness on Doctor Who and its spinoff, Torchwood. Barrowman is also an epic entertainer: he can sing, he can dance, he can act (obviously), and he presents and judges — he is a unique talent in the entertainment industry. He brings versatility to the Arrowverse and he is quite popular among Arrow fans.
Barrowman took to Instagram earlier this week to address recent comments made by Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow showrunner Marc Guggenheim. As the fan-favorite actor explained, he had been under the impression that there wasn’t an opportunity for him to return – until he read ComicBook.com‘s report on Guggenheim’s comments.
Earlier this year, when Merlyn (seemingly) died during the Season 5 finale, stepping on a landmine to protect his daughter Thea Queen, some fans didn’t believe that his ending was permanent, noting that characters have survived worse on Arrow as well as its sister shows, The Flash, Supergirl, and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.
Marc Guggenheim’s response?
“That’s up to John,” says Guggenheim. “We told John when we called him to tell him about the events of the finale, every single person on all the shows has come back in some shape or form. We’ve got flashbacks, we’ve got time travel, we’ve got parallel universes. Goodbye is never goodbye. He has an open invitation to return to the show any time he wants.”

“I am surprised and very happy to hear Marc Guggenheim’s comments about Merlyn’s future in the Arrowverse,” says Barrowman, “because in a very decisive phone conversation we had with [co-executive producer] Wendy Mericle, I was led to believe that there were no plans to bring Merlyn back.”

If they have changed their mind, awesome! I have LOVED playing Malcom Merlyn and was SO disappointed to be told the news of his death and to no longer be part of a fantastic team and show. If they want me back, they just have to ask! The ball is back in their court. Write Merlyn an amazing storyline and I will be there. John Barrowman went on to say that he will gladly return to any of the Arrowverse shows, given that there is an interesting storyline for his character.

This is certainly music to fans’ ears. No doubt the fans of Arrowverse will be speculating his return whether it will be a resurrection on Arrow or maybe he will appear in a parallel universe.
