Penultimate episodes are fatal. Plain and simple. The penultimate episode of Season 1 of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow took the life of Leonard Snart (Wentworth Miller)–who made a very welcome return tonight. Five days later, the penultimate episode of The Flash‘s second season took the life of Barry’s (Grant Gustin) father, Henry Allen (John Wesley Shipp), when Zoom (Teddy Sears) unexpectedly killed him. Tonight, Barry lost the one person he swore he would protect with his life…the one person whose death would make him become the very monster that kills them: Iris Ann West (Candice Patton). Tonight, the glue that holds Team Flash together, Joe’s (Jesse L. Martin) pride and joy, and the love of Barry’s life took her last breath. Fans across the world sat and witnessed the intense and heart-breaking 24 hours that led up to it.

I’d like to start this recap with a shoutout to music supervisor Season Kent. Oh my god. The use of Aurora’s “Murder Song (5, 4, 3, 2, 1)” in this episode will no doubt go down in Flash history. It’s the song that this episode opens on as we see shots of Team Flash all coming to terms with the fact that the day Iris dies has finally arrived. H.R. (Tom Cavanagh) and Tracy (Anne Dudek) are drinking coffee in the workshop. Cisco (Carlos Valdes) apparently asked Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards) for help finding a power source for the Speed Force Bazooka but she hasn’t come up with anything. Joe and Wally (Keiynan Lonsdale) are at their house comforting each other. Finally, we see Barry and Iris lying awake in bed. Iris asks Barry to get her caviar. Wanting to make her happy, he goes to find some, but not before asking her to have faith in the team. When he leaves, Iris grabs his phone and starts recording a video for him.

In the morning (as Iris is putting on the jacket we know she dies in), Barry receives a call from Cisco. Whatever it was about, it’s good news.

We then see Barry and Cisco meeting up with Lyla (Audrey Marie Anderson) at ARGUS. The good news? Cisco tasked the STAR Labs satellite to find a power source with enough energy to power the Speed Force Bazooka and he found one at ARGUS. Lyla confirms that she does indeed have one of the mind control devices from the Dominators’ ship. Barry asks her if they can have it and she says no. Barry then asks her if this is because he erased Baby Sara from existence. Lyla says that it’s more about what caused that to happen: Flashpoint. She doesn’t believe she can trust Barry to not make another mistake. If the tech gets into the wrong hands, millions of people could die. Barry then informs her that Iris’ life is on the line. Lyla still refuses.

” I’ll see you all on May 23rd at the ‘Finish Line’ ” would have been a more interesting ending statement 🙂 .

I finish up these recaps somewhere around 4am. My brain is barely working anymore by that point. Excuse me while I go back and edit that sentence because this is perfect.
