I’m a theatre geek. I stood onstage for the first time in first grade and never looked back. I’m currently majoring in theatre in college. The theater is my second home and musicals have helped me become the person I am today. I couldn’t be more thrilled when it was announced back in August that my worlds (the Arrowverse and musicals) would be colliding on my all-time TV favorite show. Tonight, that finally happened and a smile never left my face. Superheroes sang and it was one of the best things I’d ever seen on TV. Cue the overture! It’s time to break down The Flash and Supergirl’s ‘duet’.
The episode begins 18 years ago with a nine-year old Barry (Liam Hughes) and his mom (Michelle Harrison) watching Singin’ in the Rain. Nora explains to him that when you sing, you “open up your soul and let who you really are shine through”. We then cut to the present where Barry (Grant Gustin) is watching the same movie in Cisco’s (Carlos Valdes) apartment where he’s now crashing post-breakup. (This was the first of two awesome nods to Gustin’s musical past! Click here to see him perform “Good Morning” during his days at Elon University and, on a more somber note, click here to see what Gustin did the day Debbie Reynolds passed away.) Cisco comes in and can’t believe that he’s watching the same movie again. He tries to get him to go out but to no avail. He then tells Barry that he wants to help him but Barry says there’s nothing he can do. Cisco and Barry then get a text from H.R. (Tom Cavanagh).
They head to STAR Labs and meet H.R. and Wally (Keiynan Lonsdale) in the basement. A breach is open. J’onn (David Harewood) and Mon-El (Chris Wood) arrive with an unconscious Kara (Melissa Benoist). Barry asks what happened to her and J’onn tells him that the person who whammied her (Darren Criss) fled to Earth-1.
Caitlin (Danielle Panabaker) is monitoring Kara in her lab. She says that her vitals are low. Mon-El threatens to get physical with her attacker. Barry asks him who he is and Mon-El awkwardly explains that he’s Kara’s boyfriend. J’onn reminds him that they broke up. H.R. brings up the recent WestAllen breakup. Barry promises Mon-El that they’re going to get Kara to wake up. When Iris (Candice Patton) asks what happened, J’onn and Mon-El explain that an alien prisoner escaped their custody, whammied Kara, and then ran to Earth-1. Iris asks why he would come over to their dimension and Mon-El says he was looking for “the fastest man alive”. Cisco leaves to find the breacher.
