The upcoming musical crossover between Supergirl and The Flash, ‘Duet,’ is adding even more star power — this time behind-the-scenes. New songwriters for the episode have been revealed, and they bring with them some serious credentials.
Songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul will contribute the song “Runnin’ Home to You,” to be sung (appropriately enough) by the Flash himself, Grant Gustin. Pasek and Paul are up for an Oscar this year for their song “City of Stars,” from the film La La Land. The song has already taken home awards at the Golden Globes and the Critics Choice Awards.
“Benj and Justin are the premiere song-writing duo of our time,” says The Flash/Supergirl executive producer Andrew Kreisberg. “Not only are they two of the most talented people Greg [Berlanti] and I have ever met, they are also two of the nicest. To have them be a part of our musical episode is beyond our wildest expectations. We hope everyone falls in love with the song they wrote for us as much as we did.”

Keeping it in the CW Family
Rachel Bloom, the creator and star of fellow CW series Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, also contributed a song to the episode. Bloom says she contacted CW president Mark Pedowitz as soon as she heard about the musical episode, and he put her in touch with Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg.
“Music can be one of the most amazing and efficient forms of storytelling and character development. Also, it was really fun to write a comedy song for two superheroes.”
“I immediately offered them my services,” says Bloom. “As soon as they picked one of my song ideas, I hopped on the phone with my old Robot Chicken boss Tom Root and we brainstormed and, based on that brainstorm, I wrote up the song ‘Super Friend.’ I am so excited to contribute more to the upward trend that is musicals in television and film. Bloom’s song, “Super Friend,” will be a duet sung by Grant Gustin and Supergirl star Melissa Benoist.
Other actors confirmed to sing in the episode include Jesse L. Martin, Victor Garber, Carlos Valdes, Jeremy Jordan, and John Barrowman. Benoist and Grant’s former Glee co-star Darren Criss will appear as the story’s villain, Music Meister.
The musical crossover will begin with a scene on the March 20 episode of Supergirl and will continue in earnest on the March 21 episode of The Flash, ‘Duet.’
