With all of the Flashpoint-related storylines happening on The Flash this season, one character flying under the radar is Iris West. In some ways, that’s a good thing. Barry and Iris seem to have finally settled into a functional relationship, something fans have been clamoring for since the show’s inception.
IGN recently talked with actress Candice Patton and got her thoughts on the upcoming four-show crossover, Invasion!, plus more on Wally’s jealousy, Iris and Barry’s relationship, and more.
The DC TV Universe
First, Patton talked about being part of an ever-expanding universe. “It’s a testament to what DC TV has been able to do on The CW,” she said. “It gives us hope as Flash cast members that in a couple years maybe we’ll be here doing the same thing. I don’t know that any of us imagined that it could be this big going into four different shows, so I am really lucky to be a part of this. I’m excited that hopefully I’ll be here for [The Flash‘s] 100th episode.”
“I’m afraid this season she is not crossing over.”
Since Iris isn’t a superhero, she generally doesn’t take part in crossover episodes. Will Invasion! be any different? “I’m afraid this season she is not crossing over,” said Patton. “I know, I know! I’m always advocating for it, but there’s a lot of characters across four shows. It’s got to make sense, and I guess this year it didn’t make sense. She’s very much involved in the crossover that happens in The Flash, we just don’t see her crossover to Legends, Supergirl or Arrow.”
Don’t fret, though. Iris will still interact with the heroes of the other three shows during The Flash portion of the crossover. “Yeah, all of the fan favorites Iris gets to meet,” said Patton. “It’s really cool. Even getting to see Supergirl/Kara fly for the first time doing those stunts. It’s… I geek out as well, because we don’t have that on our show. Grant [Gustin] just kind of zips in and zips out. Using a harness to fly up is cool for us!”
Barry and Iris
Patton also revealed that the new “normal” between Barry and Iris will stick around. “I think it’s fair to say that if there’s any superhero that could have a healthy, normal relationship, it’s Barry Allen,” she said.
“I think we can expect to see a very healthy, normal relationship with Barry and Iris”
“One thing about Barry is his relationships and his family is really important to him,” said Patton. “It’s what makes him a superhero. Yes, I think we can expect to see a very healthy, normal relationship with Barry and Iris this season…I think it’s just been a long time coming. I think we’ve all kind of known that Barry and Iris were destined to be together, it just had to come at the right time. It’s more of a relief to get to play those iconic moments with Barry and Iris.”
And finally, how is Iris dealing with Wally’s issues this season? “I think Iris is always going to worried for Wally jumping into anything head first,” said Patton. “He loves speed, he’s a little hot headed and he’s a little reckless. She’s worried about him. Barry is different. He’s a little more controlled and thoughtful with the things that he does. And Wally’s just kind of doing whatever he wants whenever he wants to do it. I think she’s worried for him, but she wants to support him always.”
The Flash airs Tuesday nights at 8/7c on The CW. Next week’s episode will see Wally’s jealousy come to a head as he begins to receive visions of himself as Kid Flash in the Flashpoint timeline.
