Imagine having the break the most tragic news imaginable to your young son. What if you could find a meaningful metaphor using his own favorite imaginary idols: superheroes? That’s the premise behind Jeff Cassidy’s new short film, Sidekick.

Cassidy is a Vancouver resident and a long-time camera operator for television and movie productions. Due to his work on The Flash, Cassidy was able to convince Tom Cavanagh and Arrow‘s Emily Bett Rickards to star in the new short.

Finding the Light in the Darkness

Once Upon a Time‘s Josh Dallas takes the lead role, as a father who’s recently received a devastating diagnosis. Rickards plays his wife, and together, the emotions they try hard to mask tip off their young son that something is wrong.

At bedtime, Dallas’ father character decides to tell his son a decidedly different kind of superhero story. Dallas and Rickards then take on dual roles as Captain Strong and his beloved Princess.

Captain Strong does battle against his mortal enemy, Darkman, played by Cavanagh. His numerous attempts to lure Captain Strong into a trap using the Princess as bait finally come to a head in a climatic battle.

Sidekick: Behind-the-Scenes

The entire 15-minute short movie is available to watch for free (above). In addition, the Sidekick production team also released a short behind-the-scenes video in which Dallas explains how he came to be a part of the film:

“The director, Jeff Cassidy, came to me. He wrote this script. It was a beautiful script about a man who was dealing with his own mortality and how he then conveys that to his young son and the struggles that he goes through with his wife in order to deal with his impending death. That’s what drew me to the part.”

It’s a wonderful, heartbreaking short film that tackles a topic no parent wants to have to discuss. Do yourself a favor and give it a watch now.
