Just yesterday, Supergirl executive producer Andrew Kreisberg announced that James Olsen would become a hero in his own right this season. Now we have our first look at actor Mehcad Brooks suited up as The Guardian.

Here’s Andrew Kreisberg on James Olsen’s upcoming transformation:

“James has a pretty big turn coming up. These next few episodes are going to make him realize that being a photographer…is not enough for him, so he’s going to go on a pretty exciting career trajectory that we’re pretty pumped by. James is going to decide that he can no longer sit back and be a sidekick, so he’s going to become a vigilante. He’s going to become Guardian, complete with the shield, which is going to cause a massive problem in his relationship with Kara, because he’s not going to tell her.”

Given the quickness with which producers have released both this information and the new photo, it’s a safe bet that Brooks will be filming scenes in costume within the next few days. Anytime a big change happens with a character or a new character arrives, producers tend to send out official announcements and photos beforehand to keep the paparazzi from spoiling the fun. The same pattern was repeated earlier this year when Keiynan Lonsdale began filming scenes as Kid Flash and again when Tyler Hoechlin began filming scenes as Superman.
