Classic Superman villain to battle Tyler Hoechlin’s Man of Steel on ‘Supergirl’

When Superman flies into action at the beginning of Supergirl‘s second season, he won’t be alone. The Man of Steel will be going head-to-head with one of his classic comic book adversaries: Metallo.

EW reports that actor Frederick Schmidt has been cast in the role. Metallo has had a number of different incarnations in the comics, but here’s how the Supergirl version is described:

When international assassin John Corben is badly injured after taking on both Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) and Superman (Tyler Hoechlin), he is reborn by a shadow organization into the Kryptonite-powered supervillain Metallo.

Set photos and video taken from earlier this month showed Superman fighting a new adversary that many assumed was Metallo based on his glowing green chest:

Schmidt is an up-and-coming actor, primarily known for the 2013 independent film Starred Up. Next year he’ll appear in the zombie film Patient Zero, alongside Doctor Who‘s Matt Smith and Game of Thrones‘ Natalie Dormer.

Supergirl moves to The CW for Season 2 starting Monday, October 10. The first season is currently being re-broadcast with back-to-back episodes on The CW each Monday evening and will be available on Netflix in the US on September 13.
