Despite earlier comments from the actor and a set visit last month, Colton Haynes is not currently slated to return

With Thea hanging up the red hood in last season’s Arrow finale, many fans considered this a perfect time for Roy Harper to return and reclaim the Arsenal mantle. In fact, there were many hints that we would see Colton Haynes return and do exactly that, but according to showrunner Wendy Mericle, there’s no truth to the rumors.

Ironically, Haynes himself was responsible for starting the rumors back in May when he announced to fans at the Justice Squad Convention in Paris that he would “get to come back on a few episodes of Arrow next year.”

Then, late last month, newly promoted Arrow star Echo Kellum (Curtis Holt) posted a Snapchat video showing himself with Haynes on the Arrow set with co-star Emily Bett Rickards (Felicity Smoak):

At that point, many assumed that Haynes was, in fact, filming a new appearance on Arrow. However, Haynes was recently announced to be joining the cast of FOX’s Scream Queens for Season 2, which would seemingly preclude him from putting in any extended appearances on Arrow this year.

And according to executive producer Wendy Mericle, it’s mainly availability preventing Haynes from returning. Mericle tells TVLine, “We would have Roy back in a heartbeat. If the right circumstances come up and the right storyline presents itself, absolutely.”

So most likely, Haynes was only stopping by the Arrow set for a visit — though it’s possible producers are playing coy and Haynes did put in a small appearance (though that’s doubtful).

Haynes left Arrow in Season 3 due to crippling anxiety, which he has recently spoken out about. In a widely publicized interview in May of this year, Haynes opened up about his sexuality and spoke out his experience working on Arrow with co-creator/executive producer Greg Berlanti:

“Working for Greg was the greatest experience of my life, and when he offered me Arrow, it was a new beginning for me. I would love to do more. They know I love them. I’d go back in a second.”

Arrow returns for Season 5 (with or without Roy Harper) on Wednesday, October 5 at 8/7c on The CW.
