Former ‘The Walking Dead’ actor reveals new details on his Star City gangster

Of all the new vigilantes and other characters coming to Arrow next season, the one we’ve arguably learned the least about is Chad L. Coleman’s Tobias Church.

Modeled after Idris Elba’s gangster character Stringer Bell on HBO’s The Wire, Church is described as “a ruthless crime lord who sets out to fill the sizable void left by Damien Darhk and H.I.V.E….an ‘apex predator’ who ‘cuts his way through the shadows’ by taking down ‘the biggest threat first.'”

“Dat Green Boy bouta feel dat ‘Brass Asswhupper'”

Blastr caught up with Coleman to ask him a few questions about Church and what’s to come in Season 5 of Arrow. Here’s how Coleman describes the character:

“Tobias Church is a badass who likes to throw his intelligence and sarcasm around. Depending on your IQ and ability to negotiate on that playground will decide your fate, which involves brass knuckles!”

Producers and series star Stephen Amell have spoken at length recently about Season 5’s attempt to return the show to its gritty, Season 1 roots. Coleman seemingly affirms that Tobias Church will fit in with those plans and reveals what attracted him to the role:

“He’s a great addition to the show because he brings that street edge that we all know and love…The opportunity to play a villain on a well-established series is exciting and definitely something that grabbed my attention. Not only that, but the character is something you’ve never seen before. Think Kevin Spacey kind of smart ass, who kicks ass!”

When discussing Church’s motivations, Coleman reveals his surprising real-world inspirations behind the role:

“He wants to be King of the Underworld and take out Arrow. He’s on a mission. I told producers he’s like Jay Z, Dr. Dre, and Suge Knight all rolled into one!”

And finally, when asked who would win in a fight, Green Arrow or Tobias Church, Coleman gave this colorful answer:

“Stay tuned people! Dat Green Boy bouta feel dat ‘Brass Asswhupper'”
