Producers titled the episode after a failed Superman film scripted by Kevin Smith two decades ago
Director Kevin Smith’s episode of The Flash last season, ‘The Runaway Dinosaur,’ was very warmly received by fans and critics alike, so it was with great excitement that producers announced yesterday Smith will return to direct another Flash episode this season, as well as an episode of Supergirl.
On his Fatman on Batman podcast (recorded prior to the TCA announcement) yesterday, Smith revealed the name of the episode he’ll be directing.
“Andrew Kreisberg told me that the name of the episode is ‘Supergirl Lives,'” said Smith. “I’m gonna cry talking about this. The name of the script I wrote back in 1996 was called Superman Lives.”
Smith also posted a longer message on his Facebook page, sharing more details on the tribute inherent in the episode’s title:
The story behind Superman Lives is long and bizarre. Producer Jon Peters had a strong disdain for the character, giving Smith a list of strange demands after hiring him to write the script. Batman and Batman Returns director Tim Burton eventually boarded the film and hired Nicholas Cage to portray Superman. A number of behind-the-scenes screen tests have surfaced in recent years that show the odd designs and costume choices made for the film. As Smith mentions in his Facebook post, a full-length documentary on the making of the film called The Death of “Superman Lives”: What Happened? was released in 2015.
There’s no word yet on where Smith’s episode will land in the season order or when it will film, but it would presumably be sometime soon if the script has already been written.
Supergirl will make its second season debut on The CW starting Monday, October 10 at 8/7c.
