A source tells a popular web show the ‘Avengers’ director is ‘a lock,’ with the Music Meister to appear as the villain

Do you have your salt shaker ready? Actually, forget that — you’re gonna need a whole truckful of rock salt for this one. According to an unspecified source on the YouTube series That Hashtag Show, the director for the recently announced musical crossover between Supergirl and The Flash is none other than Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon.

Whedon has a history with both comic books and musicals, of course. He directed both Avengers films for Marvel Studios, as well as the pilot for ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Buffy had a popular musical episode titled ‘Once More With Feeling,’ and Whedon also directed the cult internet musical Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog. As That Hashtag Show points out, he also directed a first season episode of Glee, former home of Supergirl star Melissa Benoist and Flash star Grant Gustin.

The source claims that Whedon is “a lock” to direct, which is a bit unusual given that the episodes have yet to be written and likely won’t be filming until next spring. However, given Whedon’s profile as a director, it’s possible producers had to reach out to him this early in order to guarantee his availability (if there’s any truth to this story at all, that is).

'The Flash' Will 'Quickly' Explain Julian's Absence This Season

What’s more, the source claims that the villain for the two-part crossover will be the Music Meister, a villain originally created for a special musical episode of Batman: The Brave and the Bold in 2009. Music Meister was voiced in the episode by Neil Patrick Harris, who has a history with Whedon as the star of Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along BlogThat Hashtag Show speculates that Harris would likely be contacted to reprise the role for the live action crossover event.

Although this would be incredible news if true, it seems more like wishful fan thinking than anything. Much like the recently debunked rumors regarding Batwoman appearing on Supergirl next season, it’s easy to connect dots that aren’t really there.

Let’s go through the steps: producers announce that Supergirl and The Flash will stage a two-part crossover next spring. Fans think, “Who could the villain be?” Aha! What about Music Meister? He filled the same role in the animated episode, so that makes sense. And who played Music Meister? Oh yes, it was Neil Patrick Harris — who also starred in Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog for Joss Whedon. OMG, what if Joss Whedon is directing the crossover?!

This is how these things frequently get out of hand. Of course, we could be shocked to hear this news confirmed in the near future. In that case, make sure you keep the receipt for that salt truck.
