The series will feature the first gay superhero lead and will premiere in 2017

Arrow. The Flash. Vixen. DC’s Legends of Tomorrow. (Supergirl?) And now…The Ray! The CW announced today that a second animated web series set in the Arrowverse will premiere on CW Seed next year.

Freedom Fighters: The Ray is based on the long-running DC Comics character, of course, but more specifically the Grant Morrison Multiversity series, which gave a modern spin to the Golden Age Freedom Fighters. The show’s version of The Ray will also be the first gay superhero to headline a series.

Here’s the how the network describes the new show:

Raymond “Ray” Terrill was a reporter who discovered a group of government scientists working on a secret project to turn light into a weapon of mass destruction. But before he could report on his findings, the project head exposed Ray to a “genetic light bomb.” The bomb failed to kill him and instead gifted Ray with light-based powers. With these abilities, Ray realized he could go beyond reporting on injustice – he could take action to help stop it. Calling himself The Ray, he was recruited by Uncle Sam and the Freedom Fighters to fight violence and oppression wherever it exists.

Announced at today’s TCA presentation, producers are currently casting for The Ray, with the idea being that the voice actor could also reprise the role in a live-action appearance, much like Megalyn Echikunwoke and Vixen.

Arrowverse Crossover: "Crisis on Earth X"

Freedom Fighters: The Ray will premiere on CW Seed in 2017.
