‘Merlin’ actress to recur as Lex Luthor’s sister in Season 2

Two months ago, Supergirl producers revealed the identities of five new characters that would be joining the show in Season 2 when it makes its leap to The CW. Two of them, Snapper Carr (Ian Gomez) and Maggie Sawyer (Floriana Lima), were already cast back in July. Today, however, TVLine has reported that a third role has been cast: Merlin’s Katie McGrath will portray Lex Luthor’s younger sister, Lena, when the show returns in October.

A recurring role, Lena has taken over as the CEO of LuthorCorp following her brother’s incarceration. In an effort to salvage the company from its notorious reputation, Lena will cross paths with Kara (Melissa Benoist), who must decide whether she can trust the sister of her cousin’s arch-nemesis.

Lena first appeared in Superman’s Girl Friend Lois Lane #23 in 1961 and was created by Jerry Siegel and Kurt Schaffenberger. After touching a Space Brain that Lex was experimenting on, Lena temporarily gained psychic abilities. She lost them after brain surgery. Post-Crisis on Infinite Earths, she was reincarnated as Lex’s daughter. Lena was also revealed to be a main character in Smallville during its final season. Played by Cassidy Freeman, she was raised in an orphanage under the alias of Tess Mercer.

McGrath joins a host of other new actors that have been recruited for Supergirl’s second season: Teen Wolf’s Tyler Hoechlin as Superman, Wonder Woman’s Lynda Carter as the President of the United States, and The Vampire Diaries’ Chris Wood as the mysterious person in the pod.

Supergirl returns for its second season on Monday, October 10th, at 8/7c on The CW, but if you can’t wait until then to get your Kryptonian fix, The CW is currently airing Season 1 chronologically with back-to-back episodes every Monday night starting at 8/7c.
