During the Legends of Tomorrow panel at San Diego Comic-Con two weeks ago, executive producer Marc Guggenheim revealed that, alongside previously cast Vixen (Maisie Richardson-Sellers), the legends will meet four different members of the Justice Society of America in Season 2: Stargirl, Obsidian, Dr. Mid-Nite, and Commander Steel.
Today, it was announced via Entertainment Weekly that iZombie‘s Matthew MacCaull will be playing Henry Heywood, Sr., aka Commander Steel. Heywood already has familial ties with the legends as his grandson, Dr. Nate Heywood (Nick Zano), aka Citizen Steel, will be climbing aboard the Waverider next season. Nothing else is currently known about the show’s take on the character.
Henry first appeared in Steel, The Indestructible Man #1 in 1978 and was created by Gerry Conway and Don Heck. After enlisting in the United States Marine Corps, he was injured while defending his base. In an attempt to save his life, Dr. Gilbert Giles replaced Henry’s bones with a steel alloy tubing. The operation granted him superhuman durability, speed, agility, stamina, and strength.
The news of MacCaull’s casting comes just two days after Guggenheim revealed the official logo for the JSA which will be set in the 1940’s. It also raises questions as to whether or not the JSA will aid the legends in their fight against the Legion of Doom–the villains of Season 2, made up of Malcolm Merlyn (John Barrowman), Damien Darhk (Neal McDonough), Eobard Thawne (Matt Letscher), aka the Reverse Flash, and former (or future) legend, Leonard Snart (Wentworth Miller), aka Captain Cold.
Former credits of MacCaull’s also include Star Trek Beyond, Tomorrowland, and Bates Motel.
DC’s Legends of Tomorrow will return October 13th at 8/7c on The CW.
