The CW releases new photo of Hoechlin and Melissa Benoist in costume
Well, that was fast. Just last weekend at Comic-Con, upcoming Supergirl co-star Tyler Hoechlin said he hadn’t yet tried on the Superman costume, but was looking forward to it. Less than a week later, not only has Hoechlin definitely tried it on, but The CW has actually released a publicity photo of him in costume.
The new picture features Hoechlin’s Superman alongside Melissa Benoist’s Supergirl:

The new Superman suit was designed by Kiersten Ronning, the resident costume designer on Supergirl. As you can see, it’s a slightly different take on the iconic costume.
The cape has metallic clasps on the front shoulders and the designers opted for a red utility belt, much like the New 52 comic book Superman. The suit features the same textured look as Supergirl’s costume, while taking a less shiny approach than the current Henry Cavill look. Comicbook.com has a great article comparing Hoechlin’s suit to other versions of the famous outfit.
Hoechlin will appear as Superman in the first two episodes of Supergirl‘s second season, and will likely be a recurring character thereafter. Although Superman was frequently mentioned in the first season and occasionally shown with his face obscured, this will be the character’s first proper introduction on Supergirl. Producers said last week at Comic-Con that they wanted Supergirl to stand on her own before bringing in her famous cousin.
Supergirl Season 2 will premiere on Monday, October 10 at 8/7 on The CW. Starting August 1, though, The CW will begin replaying the entire first season with two episodes each Monday.
