Former ‘Vampire Diaries’ actor’s role on ‘Supergirl’ is shrouded in secrecy

Along with its move from CBS to The CW physical move from Los Angeles to Vancouver, Supergirl continues to shake up its cast for Season 2. Actor Chris Wood is slated to become a series regular next season in a currently unannounced role.

TVLine broke the news earlier today, saying, “All that we know is that the actor will be playing a surprise DC Comics character, and that he’ll make his debut early into the series’ second season.”

So who could it be? Lex Luthor perhaps? Could the Batman rumors be true? Neither one seems particularly likely since this is a series regular role and not simply a recurring role.

Wood has a long history with The CW, having previously appeared on The Carrie Diaries and The Vampire Diaries (lots of diaries at The CW), as well as this summer’s Containment mini-series. He’s also slated to play a recurring role in the second season of the PBS Civil War drama, Mercy Street.

This is just the latest casting announcement to come out of Supergirl in recent weeks. Tyler Hoechlin will appear as Clark Kent/Superman in the first two episodes of Season 2, and possibly recur afterwards. Cougar Town star Ian Gomez has joined the cast as Snapper Carr, the new CEO of CatCo Magazine, along with Floriana Lima as National City Detective Maggie Sawyer. Former Wonder Woman star Lynda Carter is also slated to appear next season as the president of the United States.

In addition, Season 1 co-star Calista Flockhart is rumored to be taking a reduced role next season, as she’s unwilling to make the move from LA to Vancouver.

We’ll likely learn much more about the second season of Supergirl at the show’s San Diego Comic-Con panel this coming Saturday — possibly including the identity of this new mystery character.
