One of DC Comics’ earliest lesbian characters comes to National City
Another new name is joining the cast of Supergirl next season. The Hollywood Reporter says producers have cast actress Floriana Lima in the role of Detective Maggie Sawyer.
Comic book fans will know Sawyer from her early days as a captain in the Metropolis Special Crimes Unit and from her days in Gotham City as the girlfriend of Kate Kate, AKA Catwoman. The two characters were eventually engaged, but a major controversy broke out when DC refused to allow the pair to marry. The Catwoman creative team left the company and the relationship was dissolved.
On Supergirl, Sawyer will be Maggie “a detective for the National City Police Department who takes a special interest in the cases involving aliens.”
Lima was last seen on last season’s short-lived ABC drama The Family as reporter Bridley Cruz. In addition to her other numerous television appearances, Lima was a regular on FOX’s The Mob Doctor from 2012-2013 and the 2008-2011 web series Poor Paul.
Lima’s Maggie Sawyer joins other new characters on Supergirl this year including Teen Wolf‘s Tyler Hoechlin as Clark Kent/Superman, Ian Gomez as CatCo Magazine CEO Snapper Carr, and former Wonder Woman Lynda Carter as the president of the United States.
Supergirl will begin its second season on Monday, October 10, at 8/7c on The CW. Starting August 1, though, The CW will reair the entire first season with two episodes each Monday night.
