Mari McCabe’s grandmother will be a main cast member, played by ‘The Originals’ star Maisie Richardson-Sellers
DC’s Legends of Tomorrow has found its new Vixen, and they’re keeping it in The CW family. Maisie Richardson-Sellers, who played Rebekah for 14 episodes of The Originals, will join the Legends cast when it returns this fall.
It was announced earlier this month that Vixen would be joining Legends of Tomorrow next season, but since original Vixen star Megalyn Echikunwoke was not available, producers took a creative route with the recasting.
Echikunwoke played the role of Mari McCabe, aka Vixen, in last summer’s animated spin-off of the same name on CW Seed, and reprised the role in a guest appearance last season on Arrow.
The new Vixen, Amaya Jiwe, will actually be Mari McCabe’s grandmother. Here’s the official character description from The CW and Warner Bros. Television:
“Amaya Jiwe – better known as Vixen – is the newest superhero to board the Waverider and join the ranks of the Legends of Tomorrow. Like her granddaughter, Mari McCabe, Amaya’s powers are derived from the mysterious Tantu Totem, which allows her to magically access the abilities of animals.”
This all makes perfect sense, actually, since it’s already been established that the Tantu Totem has been passed down by McCabe’s family for generations.
Richardson-Sellers will be the third new cast member next season, following Patrick J. Adams’ Hourman (introduced in the Season 1 finale), and Nick Zano’s recent casting as Citizen Steel. A fourth, as-yet-unnamed heroine is being cast now, as well.
Echikunwoke will return as the Mari McCabe version of Vixen in season two of her animated series later this summer (along with departed Arrow star Katie Cassidy who will reprise her role as Laurel Lance).
