Unlike Vandal Savage, the new foe for the ‘Legends of Tomorrow’ team will be revealed slowly

When Legends of Tomorrow returns this October, it will bring along new team members, a new mission, and, of course, a new villain. With Vandal Savage finally vanquished in the first season finale, it’s time for a new enemy to come along and vex Rip Hunter and the Waverider crew.

Who exactly that enemy will be, though, has thus far been a mystery — and it seems it’s going to stay that way for a while. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, executive producer Marc Guggenheim revealed that the new enemy will not be the invading Thanagarians (though one imagines they will continue to be a background threat). Rather, the season will start without a clear villain in sight:

“Unlike season 1 of Legends, where we basically had the big bad introduced in the crossover, what we’re going to do in season 2 of Legends will be more similar to what you’ve experienced in the first three seasons of Arrow or the first two seasons of Flash, where it’s more of a slow reveal and a little bit of a mystery.”

One major question concerning Legends of Tomorrow‘s second season is whether or not it will be a full 23-episode season like sister shows Arrow and The Flash, or whether it will be an abbreviated season like last year’s 16-episode run. With a fall premiere (rather than mid-season) and now this news that the villain will be a “slow reveal,” further credence is lent to the idea that we could be looking at a full-length season this year.

There are at least four new characters joining the Legends cast this season, following the departures of Hawkgirl, Hawkman, and Captain Cold. Patrick J. Adams made his debut as Rex Tyler/Hourman in the first season finale, and it was just revealed that Nick Zano will join the team as Dr. Nate Heywood, AKA Citizen Steel. Also on tap is an earlier incarnation of Vixen (from the animated CW Seed spin-off show of the same name) and an unnamed character that many believe to be Lady Blackhawk.
