Derek Zaba will be an intelligent yet physically imposing presence on ‘Arrow’ this fall
The new characters and storylines for the upcoming fifth season of Arrow continue to shape up. Following on the announcements that vigilante Wild Dog and new District Attorney Adrian Chase will be joining the show this fall, we now have word of another new character that Oliver and company will have to contend with.
No casting has been announced, but TVLine reports that a character named Derek Zaba will have a recurring role in season 5. Zaba is described as “a man of fierce intelligence whose wit and humor belie a person wrestling with deep-seated demons. Derek looks to his Jewish faith to ground himself, having been raised in a devout family, and while usually kind and well-meaning, he also can come off as a physical threat.”
It’s hard to see how Zaba could fit into what we know of Oliver’s new challenges as mayor, until you consider the other possibility — as TVLine points out, “He sounds very Russian flashback-y, yes?”
That is the most likely scenario, as we know Ollie is headed to Russia this year to finally explain that Bratva tattoo and learn to speak Russian. And that’s the one area that we haven’t yet heard anything about in regards to casting.
If this week has been any indication, we should expect to hear a casting announcement for Zaba very soon, possibly even this weekend. If not, San Diego Comic-Con is only a few short weeks away, and we’ll likely learn much, much more about Arrow‘s upcoming season there (as well as the other Arrowverse shows).
