Wild Dog revealed as the mysterious new vigilante coming to Star City next season

Earlier this month, it was revealed that Arrow producers were casting for a new vigilante character for a recurring role in the upcoming fifth season. Now we know who that character is and who will play him.

Actor Rick Gonzalez will join the cast next season as the vigilante Wild Dog. Gonzalez was most recently seen on USA’s Mr. Robot and CBS’s short-lived Battle Creek.

In the pages of DC Comics, Wild Dog is a ruthless vigilante who uses guns to mow down his enemies. Both his backstory and methods are highly reminiscent of Marvel’s The Punisher, who was featured in season 2 of Netflix’s Daredevil series and will star in his own spin-off series next year. (Ironically, after their disappointment in the Arrow season 4 finale, the moderators of the Arrow subreddit rebranded the thread after Daredevil for the rest of the summer).

Wild Dog’s real name is Jack Wheeler and he’s a former athlete and Marine. After his squad is wiped out by terrorists and his girlfriend is murdered by mobsters, Wheeler takes matters into his own hands and becomes the vigilante Wild Dog.

Also somewhat ironic is the outfit traditionally worn by Wild Dog — while his clothing may vary, his most distinguishing characteristic is the hockey mask he wears to conceal his identity. Arrow star Stephen Amell just played the hockey mask-wearing vigilante Casey Jones in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows earlier this month.

The casting call for Wild Dog’s character earlier this month (code-named “James”) described him as a “cocksure/reckless ex-Marine turned vigilante,” leading many to speculate that it was actually Wild Dog. Entertainment Weekly describes the character as “a new vigilante in Star City whose reckless and cocksure nature prompts Green Arrow (Stephen Amell) to take him under his wing.”
