The popular character from the animated ‘Vixen’ spin-off will be a series regular next season

Good news for fans of DC superheroine Vixen, as it has been announced that she will be joining the crew of the Waverider when DC’s Legends of Tomorrow returns this fall. She will not, however, be played by Megalyn Echikunwoke, who played the part in the animated Arrowverse spin-off, Vixen, and guest-starred on Arrow last season.

But don’t worry — they aren’t recasting the role. Producers actually wanted Echikunwoke’s Mari McCabe to join Legends of Tomorrow, but she wasn’t available due to a couple of upcoming film projects. So Vixen will be series regular next season, but she’ll actually be a Vixen from the past. Vixen’s powers come from a totem that passed down from generation to generation, so using a previous Vixen actually makes perfect sense, seeing how Legends of Tomorrow is a show about time travel.

We’ll still get to see Echikunwoke’s version of Vixen when her animated spin-off returns for a second second. It’s expected to premiere on CW Seed sometime this summer. And producers say the door is always open for Echikunwoke to guest-star on one of the live-action shows when her availability allows.

Casting is currently underway for the new (old) Vixen, so we should be hearing some more concrete news in the near future, possibly at San Diego Comic-Con next month.
