‘Arrow’ star tells convention audience he’s meeting with the writers this week

We all knew it was coming, but now Stephen Amell has confirmed it: the Arrow flashbacks will be headed to Russia next season.

The mystery surrounding Oliver Queen’s ties to Russia have been part of the show since the beginning, with Ollie returning from the island with a Bratva tattoo and a fluency in speaking Russian.

At a panel at Wizard World Philadelphia this past weekend, Amell was asked if the show would finally explore the Russian storyline, and Amell affirmed that it would. Of course, with this being the fifth and final year of Oliver’s exile, it’s practically a given that Russia would have to be covered this season.

Amell said he didn’t have specifics — and wouldn’t be able to share them if he did — due to his lengthy press tour for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows:

“Typically by now, I would have gone to the writers’ room and we would have had long, lengthy discussions about the upcoming season, but I wrapped Arrow, I had a really nice end-of-season dinner with Greg Berlanti, which is what we always do. We chatted about the good, the bad, the ugly, what’s coming, what’s happened, et cetera, et cetera. But we had that, and I literally haven’t been home since the beginning of May.”

Nonetheless, Amell did go on to confirm a few other Season 5 rumors that have been making the rounds. “Another vigilante from the DC universe” will join the show this year, Amell confirmed, and he also spoke at length about the “grounded” feeling that Season 5 will evoke:

Arrowverse Crossover 2017: Everything We Know So Far

“Our villain is going, in a lot of ways, be a callback to Season 1, and that’s something that you can do when you’re in Season 5, and I think that the villain that we have coming in is really going to ground the show, and take us back to some of the elements that we had in the early days before we introduced so many fantastical elements to the Arrowverse, as it were.”

Amell says he’s meeting with the Arrow writers on Wednesday to discuss Season 5 and will get the “full download” then. Whether or not he shares that information with fans remains to be seen.

At any rate, we should learn a lot more about Arrow‘s new season at San Diego Comic-Con next month, so be sure to follow us on Twitter, Facebook, and Tumblr for all the latest news and updates.
