New ‘Arrow’ villain said to be inspired by Idris Elba’s character in HBO’s ‘The Wire’

Casting news for Arrow‘s fifth season continues to heat up, as yet another new character has been unveiled today.

TVLine is reporting that producers have put out a casting call for a new season 5 villain, who sounds decidedly more grounded than the last few baddies:

“The character, tentatively named ‘Anton Church,’ is a ruthless crime lord who sets out to fill the sizable void left by Damien Darhk and H.I.V.E. The initial casting notice describes him as an ‘apex predator’ who ‘cuts his way through the shadows’ by taking down ‘the biggest threat first.'”

The Arrow producers have some very specific inspirations in mind for Anton Church, as well. He’s said to be “loosely inspired” by Stringer Bell, the drug kingpin played by Idris Elba (Pacific Rim, Star Trek Beyond) on HBO’s The Wire. The casting call “also references ex-Game of Thrones actor Jason Momoa as a physical prototype.”

Momoa is currently playing Aquaman in the new DC Extended Universe, after having cameoed in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. He’s filming the first Justice League movie now, and will then star in his own Aquaman spin-off film from director James Wan (The Conjuring, Furious 7).

Arrow star Stephen Amell has spoken out recently about his desire for the show to return to its roots, with less magic and superheroics and more street-level stories. Anton Church certainly sounds like he lives up to that description and should prove an interesting foe not only to the Green Arrow, but to newly elected Mayor Oliver Queen, as well.

This is the third new character we’ve learned about for Arrow season 5. Previous casting calls were for another villain named “James,” said to be a contemporary of Ollie’s, and for a mysterious new vigilante that will arrive in Star City.

Of course, “Anton Church” is likely just a code name used for the casting notice. So who could this new villain really be? Are they any DC characters who match this description? Or could this be an original character?

We’ll find out more at San Diego Comic Con next month and when production on Arrow‘s fifth season begins soon thereafter. Stay with us on Twitter, Facebook, and Tumblr for all the latest news and updates!
