The prolific producer behind the Arrowverse sets his sights on bringing Booster Gold to the big screen

Greg Berlanti is a busy man. As the creator/producer of current television hits Arrow, The Flash, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Supergirl, The Mysteries of Laura, and Blindspot, you’d think he might want to slow down. But you’d be wrong. News is now breaking that Berlanti is working on a film version of DC’s popular superhero Booster Gold.

The news first started as speculation when screenwriter Zack Stentz appeared on the Fat Man on Batman podcast earlier this week with hosts Kevin Smith and Marc Bernardin. Stentz, who previously scripted Thor and X-Men: First Class, was the guest writer behind the Smith-directed episode of The Flash that aired this week, “The Runaway Dinosaur.”

During the podcast, Smith asks Stentz how he came to write the Flash episode. Stentz says he was actually working on a top secret project with producers Greg Berlanti, Andrew Kreisberg, and Sarah Schechter (the same production team behind Arrow, The Flash, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, and Supergirl). That project was put on hold when Berlanti’s new baby was born, so they asked Stentz if he’d like to write for The Flash in the meantime.

Christopher Rodriguez at Cleats and Capes put two-and-two together and hypothesized that Stenz could’ve been working on the long-rumored Booster Gold movie. Later, Devin Faraci at Birth.Movies.Death. reported that he had indeed heard that Zack Stentz was working on a Booster Gold script for Greg Berlanti, who is producing and may also direct.

Today, The Hollywood Reporter named Berlanti as TV Producer of the Year, and in the accompanying interview, Berlanti confirmed his involvement in the Booster Gold movie:

“I’m attached to a few films [at Warner Bros.] now, and one, Booster Gold, is a DC property. Zack Stentz, who wrote an episode of Flash last year, just got the job, so he’s writing the script now. I’d probably direct that, or I would want to.”

Of course, this is not Berlanti’s first big screen DC Comics movie. Prior to Arrow, Berlanti was behind Warner Bros.’ ill-fated Green Lantern movie with Ryan Reynolds; though how much of the final film was Berlanti’s fault is up for debate. As he tells THR in the same interview:

“…Green Lantern is a great one to point to. I got fired from that movie as a writer and as a director, and yet my name was all over it. I still get blamed for it, even though I had nothing to do with the finished product. As Marc Guggenheim always says, there’s a very Google-able script that we did write that was not executed that I still stand by. But at the time, I thought, ‘Oh God, that noose will hang around my neck my whole life.'”

Booster Gold isn’t known much outside of the world of comic books fans, and any movie featuring the character would need to be wildly different from the current DC Extended Universe with its doom-and-gloom aesthetic. As Devin Faraci points out, there are rumors that Warner Bros. has heard the criticisms about Batman v. Superman and are making adjustments to future plans. A Booster Gold movie would definitely be an adjustment.

One disappointing note, though: many fans have been speculating and hoping that Booster Gold would make an appearance on Legends of Tomorrow, especially considering Rip Hunter is Gold’s son in the comics. Unfortunately, that now seems highly unlikely with a film version heating up.
