Despite rocky ratings, insiders tell Variety CBS intends to give Supergirl a sophomore season
Over on The CW, series renewals come fast and early each year. In fact, it was back in mid-March when the network announced its intention to renew all 11 of its original programs (including Arrowverse shows Arrow, The Flash, and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow).
On CBS, however, it’s a very different story. While CBS did announce renewals for a chunk of its programming in late March, there were several shows both old and new that were not in that announcement, chief among them being Supergirl.
With the networks set to give their upfront presentations in just three weeks (for those that don’t know, “upfronts” are big shows in New York where the networks unveil their fall slate to advertisers), the hammer has got to fall one way or the other on the remaining shows. While CBS has yet to make any official announcements, Variety spoke to industry insiders to determine the fate of shows still on the bubble.
Their sources indicate that Supergirl is likely to see a second season renewal:
“…freshman drama ‘Supergirl’ wasn’t the huge hit some hoped for, but count on it flying into another season — especially after that stellar example of corporate synergy with ‘The Flash’ crossover, which resulted in increased viewership.”
This is good news for the show’s many fans and gives renewed hope to the idea that we could see an epic four-way crossover event next season, given that Supergirl is now tangentially related to the Arrowverse.
